Construction Update

An update from Chris Madill, the World of Wonders Science Museum’s Project Manager from Chatfield Construction, Inc.:

Since breaking ground on May 6th, the under-slab plumbing and electrical is complete and by the time you read this newsletter, the 9,445 square foot concrete slab will be curing nicely.  Metal stud framing is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 2nd and the rough plumbing and electrical will follow closely behind. Most of the overhead infrastructure including mechanical ducting will be furnished and installed during mid-June and early-July and the fixtures for the building will be here before we know it.  All in all, we are on schedule!

San Joaquin Drywall, Inc. (Stockton) will be performing the metal stud framing, hanging the donated sheetrock, and preparing the texture on the newly framed walls of the Museum.  San Joaquin Drywall, Inc., owned and operated by Bruce Yates, has generously contributed a portion of labor and materials to help offset the high cost of steel these days.  Darrin Morris, VP of Operations at Epic Plastics (Lodi), a subsidiary of Pacific Supply in Rancho Cordova, graciously offered to supply approximately 160 sheets of gypsum board product which should comfortably cover all of the existing metal stud walls and finish the new framing and restroom ceilings within the Museum.

Sunridge Electric Construction, Inc. (Lodi), owned and operated by Cary Paraffin is our licensed electrician who has taken the extra time to value engineer the lighting fixture packages and dramatically drive down material expenses.  Mr. Russ Horn of 3D Electrical Contractors, Inc. (Lodi/Woodbridge) has secured multiple ‘Square D’ panel boards, circuit breakers, and trim kits to power Phase One of the Museum which will be home to the hands-on Exhibits.  Mr. Horn’s generous donation could not have been accomplished without his upstanding reputation in the industry and we thank him.

Preliminary estimates for donated materials and labor through local contractors and manufacturers is quickly approaching $50,000.00 and we look forward to several others coming forward as the World of Wonders Science Museum’s recognition grows.  We look forward to featuring many more of our local contractors who have helped contribute and bring our dream to fruition in future Newsletters, so stay tuned yet again.

The WOW Board of Directors and Officers would like to thank you, Chris, for coming on board and taking over the management of the tenant improvements (TIs).  With your help and the generous donations of so many local sub-contractors the Vision of the World of Wonders Science Museum has become a reality.  Chris and Rick Thompson, our Project Superintendent, also from Chatfield Construction, Inc., have kept us right on schedule.  The TIs on the main building are anticipated to be completed by the end of July!

Another Amazing Grant for WOW

We have received another fantastic grant donation of $10,000 from the Nathan Cummings Foundation “for general support to offer hands-on science based exhibits and programs to introduce visitors to new phenomena and scientific ideas.  The new Museum will offer education programs that coincided with the exhibits and off-site programs facilitated by science educators in schools and community centers.”

The World of Wonders Science Museum would graciously like to thank Roberta Friedman Cummings for her support and encouragement with this exciting project.

This type of generosity is the spirit that keeps us moving forward and believing in a hands-on science museum to stimulate discovery for all ages.

In 2004, a hands-on science museum was just one man’s dream and now within this year the doors of the World of Wonders Science Museum will be opened to you, our supporters, and to the Central Valley.  Thank you, Dan Ingrum, for inspiring us all.  This project has been a labor of love, but none of this could have happened without all of your involvement and financial support.  The WOW will always need your backing and help in spreading the word.

Our million dollar campaign includes finishing the TIs, partnering with the San Francisco Exploratorium, hiring staff, developing educational programs, and running the Museum five days a week.
