World of Wonders Science Museum

WOW Update - July 27, 2009

Dear Fellow WOW Enthusiasts:

Wow, it is hard to believe that just one year ago many dedicated local subcontractors, with the help of Chris Madill and Chatfield Construction, started to transform an empty, grey building into an electrifying, hands-on science museum.

Today, thousands of children throughout the greater San Joaquin Valley have had the “WOW” experience.  The World of Wonders (WOW) Science Museum is not only fun and exciting for all children but entire families are making the trek to Downtown Lodi to see what all the talk is about.  The WOW’s popularity is gaining more momentum than ever which has helped launch our new full-time hours: Wednesday-Sunday from 10am-5pm.

Once again, the WOW thanks Chris and all of the subcontractors who gave their time and supplies during those five months to bring this exhilarating museum to life. Yet, none of this would have been possible without the community’s investment in the museum.  The WOW needs your continued support to keep those doors open!  Thank you!

New Exhibits

Shake TableMake sure to come by the WOW and check out the exciting, new exhibits!  We are continuously working to expand our collection and are very happy to include two new exhibits which have been extremely popular to the WOW visitors.

The Earthquake Shake Table was created and donated by Jim and Robin Pyers.  The Hohenrieder Family generously donated the Bernoulli Principle exhibit which explains how the shape of a bird’s wing or an airplane wing can automatically give it lift as it moves through the air.  Thank you, Jim Fox for also being a huge part of bringing new exhibits and ideas to the museum.  We thank you all for your investment in the WOW!

Volunteer Update

The WOW museum is excited to inform you about our latest efforts in volunteer coordination. We are working diligently to correspond with all of our volunteer applicants and we apologize to those applicants who may have experienced a delay in response.

Jennifer HelmickWe are pleased to introduce our new Volunteer Coordinator, Jessica Helmick.  Jessica is working with our staff members to revise our volunteer application and guidelines in an effort to provide all applicants with a positive experience.

In addition, a volunteer orientation is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28th from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the museum.  Please join us to learn more about the WOW Museum and the unique opportunities we have to offer.

The day-to-day operations at the WOW would not be possible without the gracious contributions made by our volunteers.  We understand that personal schedules can be demanding, though a contribution as minimal as four hours a week can make a difference. Our volunteer coordinator will work with you to coordinate a museum placement and schedule of hours that best fits your interest and needs.  We invite anyone and everyone to help out at the WOW.

If you are interested in volunteering and interested in attending the volunteer orientation, please contact Jessica at volunteers@wowsciencemuseum.org  or at (209) 368-0WOW (0969).

Thanks to WorkNet

During the summertime, the museum participated in the San Joaquin County WorkNet Program which allowed six high school students to gain paid work experience here at the museum.  Our students will be leaving us once the new school year begins, but we greatly appreciated all of their help during WOW's first summer.  We all would like to give a very special thank you to our WorkNet students, Keanu Brown, Kamilah Gaines, Tiara Shands, Esmeralda Munoz, Jemisa Ortega-Casillas, and Jonathan Quintero.  They were a wonderful addition, and we received many compliments from visitors about our WorkNet kids’ help on the floor.
