World of Wonders Science Museum

WOW Update - November 9, 2009

Greetings WOW Enthusiasts:

Fall has arrived and the World of Wonders Science Museum is full of changes and exciting events throughout the month of November.  The WOW is now open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays, 10am-5pm.  Birthday parties are available Saturdays and Sundays, and Field Study Trips may be booked Wednesday through Friday.

Canned Food Drive at the WOW

All through the month of November and into mid December the World of Wonders Science Museum will be hosting a can food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties.  Hunger hurts.  Their goal is to provide life-sustaining meals to those in need and to silence the pain that hunger brings.

Let’s give a helping hand (and your chance to win a WOW Family Membership) by bringing the much needed canned food when you visit the WOW.  Listed below is the Food Bank’s wish list (no home canned or jarred foods):

Canned Foods:

  • Yams
  • Green beans
  • Corn
  • Peas
  • Carrots
  • Spinach
  • Cranberry

Events

November 14 - Zapotec Native Art Heirloom Rugs

Zapotec Indian weaver, Zenon will be returning!  Already three of his beautiful, completed creations are hanging in the museum. Learn about the science of rug weaving while listening to the history of his ancient ancestors from Central America. 

His rug weaving is a native art handed down through generations, from father to son.  Zenon will be bringing many of his hand woven rugs and pillows, which make excellent and unique holiday gifts.  

This will also be a day full of origami and bubble art for all ages.  Everyone will be able to create their own masterpieces. Learn more about Zenon from this website.

November 21 - Dentist Dr. Hilder

From 1:00p.m. - 3:00p.m. Dentist, Dr. Hilder of Galt will be coming in to talk about the wonders of your teeth and the science of dentistry.  Your teeth are more important then you may think.  This will be painless!

November 22 - KVIE

KVIE Day at the World of Wonders

November 28 - Cow Eye Dissection

November 28th at noon discover how the eye works, as a real cow eye is dissected layer by fascinating layer. Find out why vision is the most dominant sense, but also the least reliable. Does everyone have a “blind spot”?  How is the image of what we see transferred to our brain? What similarities are there between our eyes and a camera?  Can an eye be transplanted?  Be sure and join us for this mysteriously fun and exciting event!

Thanksgiving

We would like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all!  We will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th, but will be open to the public for Black Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Special discounts in the WOW Science Store will apply to all WOW members.  Check out the website soon for discounted offers.  Please come visit the WOW Science Store full of unique scientific Christmas gifts; discovery for all ages!

WOW Membership Drive

For the month of November and December the WOW is having a major membership drive.  WOW Family, Family Plus and Friends memberships entitle you to free or discounted  admission to Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) reciprocal science centers (all are listed at www.astc.org/sciencecenters/participating.htm).

There are  over 250 museums across the country including the San Francisco Exploratorium, Zeum in San Francisco, the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek, the Explorit Science Center in Davis, the Discovery Museum in Sacramento and Coyote Point Museum for Environmental Education in San Mateo just to name a few.  Plus, our members enjoy perks such as discounted parties and 10% off in the retail store. 

In the month of November and December if you purchase a Family, Family Plus or Friends membership you will receive a WOW organic canvas bag.  Reduce-Recycle-Reuse   Represent the WOW while helping the Earth.  Give the gift of a WOW membership during the holidays as a wonderful gift for family and friends.
